The Age's Rohan Connolly has complied another top five list for his chat with Francis Leach on SEN Afternoons on Thursday, this week choosing his top five AFL feuds that never ended.
Connolly has trawled back through the past 30 years to find five of the biggest feuds in the AFL, with the people involved ranging from coaches to players, and even assistants.
This particular feud didn't necessarily involve both players, but more so their partners.
The pair's wives were best friends until a dispute in 1997 saw them have a falling out, which resulted in Edwards and McLeod avoiding each other everywhere but the footy field.
“Bottom line was that they stopped speaking to each other except when they played together for the Crows on the field,” Connolly said.
In 2007, Denis Pagan was coming to the end of his tenure as Carlton coach, with the board interviewing potential replacements, including assistant coach Barry Mitchell.
Once Pagan found out his assistant was gunning for his role, the two-time North Melbourne premiership coach took matters into his own hands.
“Denis found out and Barry ended up working in a coaches box on the opposite side of the ground, and the communication was not there,” Connolly said.
The Hawthorn and Essendon rivalry dominated the 1980s, and the feud was fuelled in 1984 after Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy wanted the Victorian police to investigate the Hawks for drug use, following a photo that surfaced.
The picture was of players sniffing a mixture from an unnamed container, and while the police were looking around, former policeman Allan Jeans and Hawthorn coach wasn't happy with Sheedy's request, and has reportedly never forgiven him for the incident.
For the record, it was later revealed the substance was a eucalyptus-type mixture.
During the 1993 season, Derek Kickett was one of the most loved Bombers under Kevin Sheedy in their premiership-winning year.
Sheedy controversially dropped Kickett for the grand final, causing disruption between the fans as they loved Kickett.
We don't really need to go back over this again do we?
Reportedly the pair spoke at last year's 20-year 1996 premiership reunion, which may have been a little sign of reconciliation.
