Speaking to SEN's Whateley, Nick Riewoldt revealed an "awkward moment" from the 2009 AFLPA MVP Awards.

The St Kilda legend had previously won the award in 2004 but five years later he was up for it again.

“I thought I was a two-time (MVP winner). In 2009, I went along to the awards and I had a little envelope placed on my seat," he said.

“It was addressed to me and it basically was congratulating me for winning the award and that more instructions would follow, but congratulations for winning the 2009 AFL MVP."

“I didn’t win. Somehow, there had been some sort of mix up or confusion and I sat there the entire night thinking about what I might say as an acceptance speech and it just never happened."

Instead it turned out to be Gary Ablett Jr.'s third year in a row winning the award.

“It was just a bit strange. Luckily I hadn’t told anyone. If I had told someone else that I was going to be up there a little later in the night, it might have been a little more awkward, but I just enjoyed the moment by myself."

“I never really got an explanation. I got an apology, but never really got an explanation."

“I went up afterwards and said I think this might have been meant for someone else and gave them the letter."

“It was an awkward moment.”
