Former Richmond superstar Matthew Richardson revealed a hilarious story about his AFL debut, where he matched up on the late Danny Frawley.
Richardson played his first game in Round 7, 1993 against the burly Victorian fullback's St Kilda at the MCG, with his small frame cause for concern.
โI actually played on Danny in my very first game of AFL footy and then he ended up being my coach,โ Richardson said on Sportsday Radio earlier this week.
โDanny was a legendary figure. He was the State full-back, captain of St Kilda, he was a big man, the big spud farmer and I was a skinny rake from Tassie.
โI was petrified. I remembered Iโve just got to use my running ability here because it might be one thing Iโve got over him, Iโm not getting into any physical tangles with Spud.
โAfter about 20 minutes, Dannyโs tongue was hanging out a bit and he came up to me at a stoppage and whispered into my ear, โIf you keep running like that young fella, Iโm gonna knock your head offโ.
โSo I kept running a little bit more, didnโt I?โ
Frawley would go onto coach Richardson at the Tigers from 2000 to 2004 and Richardson reminisced over Frawley's efforts to prepare his team.
โWe used to do these runs called junk runs. Weโd run off into the Botanical Gardens and there was no rhyme or reason to them, youโd just run,โ he added.
โThe little added spice was that Danny would come with us. So youโd be running through the gardens and Spud would jump out from behind a tree or a shrub and heโd wrestle you.
โHeโd wrestle you to the ground for a minute or 90 seconds. Then youโd have to get up and run again. It was all about trying to duplicate that physicality of game day.
โHe did it all with us and he really respected him for that. As a coach he came out and did the hard work with us.โ
