Richmond coach Adem Yze immediately noticed something in Tom Lynch's goal-kicking routine that could be changed.

Lynch ultimately decided the result in the Round 1 clash against Carlton, inaccurately kicking 2.7 as the Blues prevailed by four points over the Tigers.

They key forward dominated Lewis Young, and had the game by the scruff of the neck but was unable to convert, kicking 1.5 in the second half as Richmond stormed back into the contest.

Yze, who was a noted goal kicker during his Melbourne playing days, was also the goal kicking coach at Hawthorn, picked up a Lynch habit that could be avoided when lining up at the big sticks.

"With Lynchy, it was part of my job at a previous club, was goal kicking, so I noticed a little technique thing that I could help with him, which we did the other day," Yze said.

"A little bit with his ball drop. When it's windy, posture and ball drop is really important. They were some things I noticed post game.

"Just to give him some confidence. He's a leader of our footy club and in some really good form, you want to get some reward for effort.

"Being an older player, you don't expect him to work through that himself. We've got Luke Breust and Newy (Chris Newman) working with our younger players, but one of our oldest players needs help as well.

"It was pretty cool to work with him during the week, and hopefully we see some reward on the weekend."

Lynch will come up against his former side, and the red-hot Gold Coast Suns, led by recruit Christian Petracca.

The 2021 Norm Smith Medallist started his career at the Suns in striking form, earning back-to-back perfect games from the coaches.

Yze and Petracca have an existing relationship during their time together at Melbourne, and the Tigers coach has some mind games he'll attempt to deploy to throw off the superstar ahead of Saturday's game.

"I'll be sending him a message," Yze said.

"He's obviously in great form. I'll flick him a message, we can't have him being best on ground against us.

"I love Trac. It's great seeing him play great footy. We understand what they're doing and the role that he's playing. We play a similar role, and we play similar roles. We've just got to do it better than them.

Yze also flagged a run-with player for Petracca.

"We know what his strengths are in the contest and forward of the ball," he added.

"It's just combatting that. And trust the player that's going to be running with him, or whether we do have a run-with or trust our system. You look at different things. Whether it's mentally, that's why a message here and there might be pretty important for me."

Premiership duo Dion Prestia and Nick Vlastuin are poised to return to the senior side after the club took a cautious approach last week.

Rhyan Mansell will be a forced omission from the team after fracturing his hand.
