Essendon half-back Conor McKenna is considering his future as a number of rival clubs are circling for the out-of-contract youngster.

After a breakout season for the Bombers that saw him play 18 games and become an important member of his club's best 22, AFL.com.au believes the Irishman is in negotiations with Essendon over a new deal, but is keeping his options open given the strong interest from other clubs.

This isn't the first time McKenna has been the subject of a bidding war, after the Bombers signed the speedster as an international rookie at the end of 2014 despite interest from a number of other AFL sides.

McKenna's 2017 season has seen him average 16.9 disposals, 3.5 marks, 2.9 rebound 50s, 2.1 inside 50s.

The 21-year-old also took 42 running bounces this season, which sees him rank sixth in that category.

McKenna is now one of the most important un-signed Bombers heading into next season, after Joe Daniher, Darcy Parish and David Zaharakis all signed contract extensions over the past few months.

The defender hasn't missed a game since round six, and will play his 18th consecutive game of the season in his side's elimination final against Sydney next Saturday afternoon.
