Carlton are eyeing a Jack Newnes swoop from St Kilda after the midfielder was left without a contract following Wednesday's trade deadline, according to AFL.com.au.

Entering the off-season as a restricted free agent, Newnes turned down a two-year deal with the Saints to explore his options in the open market.

After going unsigned, Newnes looks set to enter the delisted free agency window, with Carlton looming as the early front-runners to secure his services.

With six senior list spots available at Carlton – five should they land Jack Martin in the pre-season draft – the Blues are looking to add further midfield depth to complement their young up and coming stars.

Sydney could also make a play at Newnes after exploring the option to bring in the midfielder in 2018.

The 26-year-old played in various roles for the Saints in 2019, but is predominantly known as a wingman.

Newnes played 20 matches in 2019 and averaged 17.3 disposals per game.
