North Melbourne are set to be arguably the biggest player during the upcoming trade period, and have now set their sights on out-of-favour Sydney defender Nic Newman.

The Roos have effectively landed Jared Polec and look to be leading the race for Andrew Gaff if he leaves the Eagles, while Gold Coast Sun Aaron Hall also looks set to get to Arden Street.

Newman is well and truly on the Roos' radar, after meeting with North Melbourne on Wednesday and touring the club, according to AFL.com.au.

The 25-year-old has played 31 games for the Swans, although only 11 of those came this season, after playing just three inside the opening 16 rounds.

Newman could be the third Swan to depart via the trade period, joining Dan Hannebery and Gary Rohan on the trade table.
