Despite missing out on Stephen Coniglio, Carlton will still pursue a 'big name' midfielder this off-season, according to a report by Triple M's Damian Barrett.

On top of their reported interest in Gold Coast's Jack Martin and Sydney's Tom Papley, the Blues are believed to be keen to find another quality onballer to play alongside Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh.

"They (Carlton) will have a plan B of sorts," Barrett told Triple M's The Rub.

"It'll be another midfielder of repute. There probably gonna have to go to the contracted player status. It won't be out of the blue for that person and his management.

"I don't claim to know who he is. They were all in on Coniglio and nearly got there."

Barrett confirmed that Carlton will go after Martin and have not given up hope of landing Papley despite his contract complications.

"Jack Martin is another one they've had a lot of interest in for a long time," he said.

"And there's just something about Tom Papley's situation at the Swans that makes the Blues think that he's gettable, despite a very long term remaining on a current contract at the Swans. And despite John Longmire not wanting him to go.

"There's just something about what Carlton seem to know about that situation. They're not giving up on the possibilities of getting him."
