This century's big four are once again featuring in the penultimate week of the AFL season, and there's plenty of history, recent and enduring, among the two match-ups.

Geelong. Hawthorn. Collingwood. Brisbane.

Since 2000, 14 premierships have been won by these clubs, and their incredible finals appearances further their heroics.

The Cats lead all-comers, featuring 20 times in September. Collingwood next with 16. Then Hawthorn (14) and Brisbane (13).

Geelong and Brisbane have played off in the decider six times for four flags. Same as Collingwood, albeit with two premierships. Hawthorn five times, but with a remarkable four premierships.

The Lions, Pies and Cats all saluted in the past three seasons, while the Hawks last won in 2015, the third of their three-peat.

But where do the advantages lie? And who will make the most of the opportunity to achieve the ultimate glory yet again?

What can be said about the history of these two teams?

Hawthorn and Geelong arguably played off in the most famous grand final in 1989, with the Hawks prevailing by six points in a shootout at the MCG. A total of 42 goals were kicked that day, thanks in large part to Jason Dunstall and Gary Ablett Sr.

Since then, the two contested another decider in 2008 when the young, brash Hawks surprised the more favoured Cats, who lost only one match that year.

However, what followed was infamously dubbed the Kennett Curse.

Words from the then-president, Jeff Kennett, after Hawthorn's triumph, saying: "What they don't have, I think, is the quality of some of our players; they don't have the psychological drive we have. We've beaten Geelong when it matters."

It sparked an impressive run by Geelong, inspired by a letter from Geelong star Paul Chapman, 11 straight victories by an average margin of 8.7 points, spanning from 2009 to 2013.

It ended in the 2013 preliminary final, when the Hawks finally broke the hoodoo before winning the flag a week later.

Geelong has won the past four matches against the Hawks, but the pair of arch rivals haven't met in September since 2016.

No one can go past the 2023 grand final thriller between these two teams.

Collingwood, who didn't beat the Lions in the home and away season, managed to flip the script and return some of the heartbreak they felt in the 2002 and 2003.

The Pies have won four of the last five clashes against Brisbane, but failed to do so most recently, with Chris Fagan's men dominating them in Round 21 at the MCG.

Steeped in history, dating back to 1997, these two clubs have produced some of the best modern games, and have seen players go back and forth, and none bigger, albeit with the Brisbane Bears, than Nathan Buckley.

Dayne Beams spread his time across both states, while Jack Crisp was famously included as a part of the trade that saw Beams head north, which also helped yield Jordan De Goey for the Pies.

Mal Michael was initially a Collingwood player, but moved to Brisbane and helped secure the club three premierships, two of which were against his former side.

Leigh Matthews coached both teams to a premiership, and current Pies coach Craig McRae was a part of the Lions dynasty 20 years ago.
