Geelong coach Chris Scott's old-fashioned spray in Round 1 was a glimpse of football's past.

The Cats trailed by 33 points at quarter-time against Fremantle in front of a home crowd, and stared down the barrel of a 0-2 start for the third time in Scott's tenure.

"We weren't playing the way we wanted to play," Geelong forward Shannon Neale shared shortly after they secured the victory.

"I think the word disgraceful was used."

Geelong assistant coach Nathan Buckley said, on Fox Footy, Scott's quarter-time assault was "a four or five out of 10".

Scott's spray was reminiscent of his predecessors, and with that, we've taken the liberty of compiling the top 10 coaching sprays.

5Ron's rants

The great Ron Barassi was largely known for his playing and coaching exploits, resulting in 10 premierships and plenty more accolades that made him synonymous with football.

But on the outskirts of his glittering time in the game, there were moments that made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Barassi wasn't shy of pulling his players up during his time at Melbourne, Carlton, North Melbourne and Sydney.

Shane Zantuck, in 1984, was involved in arguably the most infamous coach sprays, which almost turned into much more before teammate Robbie Flower intervened.

It is understood that during the three-quarter time rant, Zantuck didn't waver in his eye contact of Barassi, standing out amongst the group.

The pair almost came to blows, but have since laughed it off.
