Geelong coach Chris Scott's old-fashioned spray in Round 1 was a glimpse of football's past.

The Cats trailed by 33 points at quarter-time against Fremantle in front of a home crowd, and stared down the barrel of a 0-2 start for the third time in Scott's tenure.

"We weren't playing the way we wanted to play," Geelong forward Shannon Neale shared shortly after they secured the victory.

"I think the word disgraceful was used."

Geelong assistant coach Nathan Buckley said, on Fox Footy, Scott's quarter-time assault was "a four or five out of 10".

Scott's spray was reminiscent of his predecessors, and with that, we've taken the liberty of compiling the top 10 coaching sprays.

8Buckley at Witts end

Former Collingwood ruckman Jarrod Witts felt the entire rath of club great Nathan Buckley sitting on the pine at the MCG in 2014.

Buckley was challenging the ruckman to assert himself on the game, and believe in himself. However, the moment was captured in a public forum.

The Pies champ grabbed Witts' jumper as he was on the bench, and was visibly angered by his effort.

Buckley wasn't wrong about Witts' potential, although Gold Coast have been the beneficiaries of the ruckman. He departed Collingwood at the end of 2016, joining the Suns as the no.1 big man.

"I felt compelled to come out of coaches' box and grab ‘Wittsy' by the scruff of his guernsey and to shake him," Buckley reflected on SEN in 2022.

"That was very graphic, and it was played ad infinitum in the next couple of days.

"I followed up with Wittsy after the game and then later in the week and apologised that it was so public. Then I said, ‘How are you' and then we had a discussion around what did you get out of that."
