Collingwood has signed former US College basketballer, Jack Madgen as a category B rookie.

The 24-year-old grew up in South Australia playing both football and basketball, before turning his attention to the latter and spending four years playing at Delta State University, in Cleveland, Mississippi.

"My brother had done the college scene and my sister was at the AIS for basketball when I had to make the choice," Madgen told Collingwood's website.

"To be honest, I was probably better at footy, but basketball was a passion. I really wanted to go to college and get an education and university degree."

Recruiting manager Derek Hine said the club is excited about what Madgen can achieve at AFL level.

"In addition to impressive defensive capabilities, Jack has a huge work ethic and a real willingness to learn the game," Hine said.

"He's mature, professional and will be willing to do extras to help improve his game."
