The final Saturday in September is a day that is marked off on every calendar at the start of the year, however, if you're expecting your side to make this year's big dance, there'll be one major change at the MCG in 2017.

While Yarra Park is usually filled to capacity on match days, the MCC are set to announce that there will be a parking ban at this years AFL Grand Final.

The move to ban parking on the AFL's biggest day comes as the MCG, police and security agencies begin to ramp up preparations for the league's finals series.

MCC venue and event services manager Gerard Griffin joined 3AW on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the matter.

"Itโ€™s not a done deal but it's highly likely," MCC venue and event services manager Gerard Griffin told 3AW.ย

"Itโ€™s a combination of security, safety and logistics

"Itโ€™s becoming a very challenging park to juggle."

In recent years, the AFL has launched a number of corporate marquees in the Yarra Park precinct along with a free fan festival to increase fanfare around the area, both of which have already impacted the number of cars able to park in the area.
A final decision will be confirmed by the MCC within the next fortnight, with only fans with disabilities and emergency vehicles set to be allowed to park in a designated area.
With only two sides from Melbourne currently occupying spots in the top eight, the ban may not have as big an impact as first thought, with members from competing clubs given priority seating meaning many could travel to the event via air or train.
