Former hawthorn and Carlton premiership coach David Parkin says that the Blues still have a worse list than Essendon, despite 12 current Bombers banned for one year due to the supplements saga.

โ€œWhat theyโ€™ve been able to do is sell some hope, and they couldnโ€™t have charged a better person,โ€ Parkin told AAP.

โ€œBrendon is a teaching coach, and thatโ€™s what they need because they are starting probably with the worst list of an AFL club, including Essendon whoโ€™ve lost half their players.

โ€œHeโ€™s stripped the thing right back, and heโ€™s going to teach from day one.

โ€œItโ€™s a rebuild of significance, and that canโ€™t be done in two or three years.

โ€œEven if they recruit right and develop right, itโ€™s a four or five-year process to become competitive.โ€

Essendon's top-up players include Geelong premiership players James Kelly and Matthew Stokes and former Fremantle Grand Finalist, Ryan Crowley.

โ€œJohn is a really solid citizen to bring in a variety of players ... whoโ€™ve had various histories of success and non-success, bring them into the bunch thatโ€™s there and collaboratively bring them together to play,โ€ Parkin said.

โ€œMy goodness, thatโ€™s not like Brendon starting with a group and saying we all go together โ€” this is a melting pot.

โ€œIโ€™m hoping John can work a miracle."
