Two-time Geelong premiership player Cameron Mooney says the Cats should forget about trying to lure Gary Ablett back home.

Reports emerged last week that Ablett had requested a move back to Geelong during the recent trade period, however, his request was denied by the Suns.

Season 2017 is sure to be full of speculation about whether the two-time Brownlow Medalist will return to Kardinia Park at the end of next season, however, Mooney does not expect see ever see Gazza in the blue and white hoops again.

“No. I honestly don’t think it will happen,” Mooney said on SEN Radio on Monday morning.

“It’s too hard, for it to happen Gold Coast would have to pay some of his contract or he would have to take a huge pay cut, like I’m talking huge pay cut.

“There’s no way in the world Gold Coast are going to say, ‘Go home and we’ll pay half of it for you’, no way in the world is that going to happen. They’ll make him play it out and they should.

“Unless it’s basically handed to (Geelong), they should move on and look to the future.”

Since the news was broken by Fairfax last week, several media personalities have questioned Ablett's capacity to captain the club and his commitment to his team, but Mooney dismissed fears Ablett may struggle to find form next season.

“I can guarantee you now that he will commit 110 per cent to the football club,” Mooney said.

“Go back to 2010 when there was speculation that Gary was going to leave Geelong and go to the Suns, he had his best year of football from a Geelong point of view. I believe he should have won the Brownlow that year.”
