Melbourne superstar Clayton Oliver is in some doubt to face Collingwood on Monday after being admitted to hospital this week due to an infected blister

Oliver was poised to make his return from a hamstring strain in Round 13 after missing the past two matches, with the ailment clearing in time for the blockbuster clash against the Magpies.

While the four-time best and fairest winner was tipped to return, an infected blister has kept the 25-year-old away from training this week.

Oliver was expected to train with teammates on Tuesday before battling his latest setback and has since been admitted to hospital to be placed on an IV drip and antibiotics.

According to 7 News reporter Mitch Cleary, Oliver is racing the clock to be fit in time for Monday's clash at the MCG.

"(Oliver) has been subjected to an IV drip and antibiotics dealing with the nasty infected blister that has worsened in the last 24 hours," Cleary said on Wednesday.

"The demons had locked Oliver in for return from his hamstring injury, but he was absent from the club yesterday and missed a golf day with teammates today, now racing the clock to prove hit his fitness in time to face the Pies Monday."

Another week on the sidelines for Oliver would be a detrimental blow for Simon Goodwin and the Demons as they look to upset the ladder-leading Magpies and hold onto their top four spot.

Goodwin will be forced into at least one change for the encounter, with defender Jake Bowey suffering a concussion last Friday against Carlton, with veteran backman Michael Hibberd expected to take his place after being managed.

Collingwood are also in line to call on several changes, with Jordan De Goey ruled out for the next three games due to suspension. Magpies coach Craig McRae has confirmed Patrick Lipinski and Jamie Elliott are in the mix to return from shoulder issues.

There is a watch on forward Beau McCreery after he sustained an ankle injury against West Coast last week, while Dan McStay (finger) and Will Hoskin-Elliott (ankle) have both been cleared to play this week.

Teams for Monday's King's Birthday clash between Melbourne and Collingwood will be confirmed ar 6:20pm (AEST).
