Melbourne is hopeful veteran midfielder Jack Viney ticks off the remaining boxes to exit the concussion protocols, and put his hand up for the St Kilda clash.

Viney has missed the last three weeks of football after developing delayed concussion symptoms against Hawthorn in Round 9, but has progressed towards a return in recent days.

Wednesday's training session will entail "incidental contact" with the hope that he'll have no symptoms.

"On track to play this week," Demons coach Simon Goodwin said.

"He's been working through his protocols. Obviously, it's a 12-day minimum, and Jack's is very individualised. It's taken a little bit longer to work through the protocols, but everything so far, that we've seen, is tracking towards playing this week."

The Demons will be forced into at least one change against the Saints after forward Charlie Spargo copped a heavy hit in the win over Sydney.

Spargo suffered a fractured scapula, with scans revealing the injury the following day, and will miss at least a month of football.

The 25-year-old has had a string of injuries that have plagued him through the past two seasons, playing a combined 15 matches in 2023 and 2024, on top of the latest setback.

"Shattered for Charlie," Goodwin added.

"He's done so much work on the Achilles to work his way back from missing 12 months, now to have a fractured scapula, is pretty disappointing.

"He's been such a great contributor in the last four to six weeks in the AFL team. He's been a bit part in helping us in many areas of our team, but we'll get him back at the right time of the year."

Goodwin revealed that Spargo's injury came "30 seconds to 1 minute before" the collision with Sydney captain Callum Mills.

The Swans skipper was offered a one-match suspension for his bump on the Demons forward, and will miss the club's clash against Adelaide.

"It wasn't that incident, and we need to be clear on that," Goodwin said.

"It was an incident that was 30 seconds to 1 minute before that, when the ball rolled out of bounds."

Melbourne will jump on a plane on Friday and head to Alice Springs to take on St Kilda at TIO Traeger Park.
