Melbourne has removed veteran midfielder Jack Viney from their extended squad for Sunday's game against St Kilda in Alice Springs.
Viney was initially named as a potential inclusion for the Round 12 match, which would have been his first appearance since Round 8 against West Coast.
The premiership Demon has continued to battle with concussion since suffering delayed symptoms after the game against the Eagles, with Viney needing to work through the required protocols.
Named to potentially make the trip to the Northern Territory this week for a return game, Viney has since been pulled from Melbourne's 26-man squad to face the Saints.
"Jack has been slowly improving but unfortunately is not quite ready to return this week," Demons football boss Alan Richardson said.
"Following our training session this morning, it was decided Jack wasn't quite ready for the demands of an AFL game.
"The objective measures are tracking well, and he will still travel with the team to Alice Springs, where he will complete a game-load training session there."
The Demons have confirmed Viney will continue to work through the concussion protocols and will eye a return to the senior side in the near future.
Young forward Jacob van Rooyen has been named in Viney's place as one of four potential inclusions alongside Jed Adams, Bailey Laurie and Jack Henderson.
Small forward Charlie Spargo (scapula) is the only confirmed out for the Demons.
Reduced squads will be named at 5:00pm (AEST) on Friday, with both sides to confirm their final lineups an hour prior to Sunday's 3:20pm bounce at ATraeger Park.
