AFL legend Leigh Matthews doesn't believe Carlton will feature in September this year.

The Blues finished last season with six wins out of their last 11 games under interim and now senior coach David Teague, after going 1-11 under Brendon Bolton.

There is a renewed sense of belief that Carlton will rise up the ladder in 2020, but Matthews isn't buying it.

Speaking onย Sportsday,ย Matthews believes that the Blues are closer to finishing in the bottom four than they are to finish in the top eight.

โ€œI donโ€™t think they (Carlton) are going to play finals in my view,โ€ he said.

โ€œFive of the last seven they won were: Freo, Swans, Suns, Crows and St Kilda, who all werenโ€™t going that good in the last bit of the year.

โ€œNevertheless, I think they have removed themselves from being the bottom of the ladder chopping block. Sometimes that's the first step.

โ€œI reckon theyโ€™re closer to bottom four than finals.โ€

Carlton open their 2020 campaign against the reigning premiers, Richmond on March 19th in their traditional season opening match up at the MCG
