Lyon: Harry Taylor not the best option up forward for Geelong

Former Melbourne forward Garry Lyon says the Cats have got it wrong when it comes to Tom Hawkins' partner in crown in the forward line this season.

All-Australian defender Harry Taylor has been training in the forward line this pre-season and is set to form a partnership with Hawkins this year as Geelong looks to add another key tall in the front third.

However, SEN Breakfast host, Lyon, said Geelong should keep Taylor in the defensive 50.

“I’m not sure what they (Geelong) are doing with Harry Taylor,” he said on SEN on Friday morning.

“If they have invested in a summer of playing him forward or training him forward, then they’ve got to give it a chance to work. It doesn’t appear to me as if it’s anywhere close to working."

Lyon instead suggested moving Lachie Henderson forward would be a better option for the Cats.

“Lachie Henderson, to me, has a better chance of being a forward than Harry Taylor,” Lyon said.

“From the outside looking in, I’d say they have got that wrong.

“I’d say Henderson is your man to go forward and partner Tom Hawkins.

“They do need another good sized forward. (Mitch) Clark and (Nathan) Vardy were the two they had pencilled in to play that role and they both, for different reasons, haven’t been able to work.

“I think Henderson is a more natural forward than Harry Taylor.”

Taylor has kicked two goals in three games in the JLT Series.
