Collingwood star Dayne Beams has taken an indefinite leave from the club to focus on his mental health.

The 29-year old said he needed to take a step away to prioritise he and his family's wellbeing.

“I have been on the record in the past about the battles I have fought. Right now, I need to step away and regather myself,” Beams told the club website.

“I hope people will understand that this is something I need to do for myself and, importantly, my family. Our wellbeing is the highest priority.”

The gun midfielder was traded back to the Pies from Brisbane in the off-season for two first-round picks.

He is currently sidelined with a hip injury that is expected to hold him out until the end of the season.
