Geelong have released a club statement on the future of current Gold Coast Sun and former Cat Gary Ablett on their website.

Following Ablett's trade request on Tuesday afternoon that saw him ask the Suns for a move back to Geelong, the Cats said they were willing to work with Gold Coast in the trade period on a deal suitable for both parties.

"The Geelong Football Club will work with the Gold Coast Football Club after Gary Ablett today expressed his desire to return to Geelong during the trade period," the statement began.

"The club is respectful of the fact Ablett is a contracted player with the Gold Coast and as such, the Suns have the final say on a trade agreement.

"The club will not make any further comment until the trade period."

Ablett played the first 192 games of his career at the Cats between 2002-2010, before moving to the Suns ahead of the 2011 season.
