Melbourne assistant coach Adem Yze has confirmed he has had "initial" discussions with the Giants over the vacant senior coach role.

Former coach Leon Cameron departed the club earlier in the season, while David Noble's recent departure from the Kangaroo's has left two senior coaching positions on offer.

Former Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has been linked to the role, and that on offer at North too, while current interim coach Mark McVeigh has also expressed interest in remaining in charge.

Yze has been an assistant at the Demons since the end of 2020, the club in which he played 271 games for, after spending nine years at the Hawks.

Widely considered a coach-in-waiting, Yze interviewed for the vacant Adelaide senior coach position in 2019, which ultimately went to Matthew Nicks.

Speaking on Triple M ahead of Melbourne's match against Port Adelaide, Yze confirmed he was having discussions with GWS, with the support of the Demons.

“I’ve had an initial discussion to sound out whether I want to go through the process and it was just an informal discussion, if it moves forward from here we will know a bit more in due course," Yze said.

When asked if he was interested in taking the next steps in the process, the 44-year-old confirmed that he would find time around his schedule with the reigning premiers to have additional discussions.

"Yeah I am. I've spoken to them and we've had initial discussions at a low level and whether I was keen to go and present and I feel that I will. That will happen later in the year and I'm looking forward to seeing how that all unfolds," Yze said.

"We're really open with that discussion. The footy club are really happy for me to go through it and I've been pretty open with them to say that I don't want it to impact on my job at hand right now.

"That's why it's probably going to drag out a bit longer than normal I think but like I've said, I've only had an initial discussion and now we're just trying to work out the best time that fits within our program to present to them, so we will work that out the next couple of weeks."
