Jake Carlisle's lawyers have linked the 24-year-old's illicit drug use in the off-season with the trauma of dealing with Essendon's supplements scandal for the past three years.
The Age has reported that Carlisle is likely to launch a compensation claim, with his lawyers set to argue that Essendon's supplements scandal and the effects it had on the new Saints' recruit, contributed to his decision to take illicit drugs in the off-season.
Carlisle's legal strategy will not entirely blame the supplements program for his drug use, but his representatives will reportedly claim there was certainly a link between the two.
St Kilda's new recruit was caught taking drugs while holidaying in America late last year. The Saints then suspended Carlisle for four weeks, before he was later suspended for 12-months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport due to Essendon's controversial supplements regime. St Kilda then stopped paying Carlisle's wages after he was handed the one year ban.
However, AFL journalist Damian Barrett says the claims are ridiculous.
โI donโt think Iโve heard anything more ridiculous,โ Barrett told Triple Mโs Rush Hour on Monday.
โIโm not one to naturally defend Essendon on any aspect of this case but for Carlisle to say that, โI took illicit drugs based upon Essendon giving me potentially performance-enhancing ones,โ itโs a pretty long bow as far as I see.
โHeโs entitled to claim legally but I wouldnโt be using that as a reason when itโs all said and done, I reckon theyโve got enough to deal with and just deal with the facts of the matter and theyโre as bleak as they can be anyway from an Essendon perspective.โ
