AFL coaching legend Mick Malthouse says the league should introduce a 10-minute sin bin rule to remove players from the field who perform grievous acts.

Speaking on Melbourne's SEN Radio on Wednesday morning Malthouse said, after much consideration, he is for the idea of introducing some form of send-off rule into the AFL.

“I’ve quite often thought about this,” Malthouse said.

“When a side in soccer loses one player in 11, it’s quite debilitating. If you take one away in rugby it’s the same ... it’s 15 down to 14.

“I think we can cope with a 10-minute sin bin.”

But Malthouse warned the rule would have to be very carefully defined before it was implemented.

“The Jonas one would be pretty blatant to me, it would be easy to pick, others you’ve got to be very careful," he said.

"With caution I'd agree with it, but it's got to be really strictly defined to say that this is a ten minute one or twenty minute one whatever the penalty is."

"It would just be another element to our game and I don't know why we have to stand still on that,"
