The Hawthorn Hawks have announced a historic change to their leadership group, with two players to be named as captain for the first time in club history.

Star midfielder Jai Newcombe has been promoted to the role as co-captain, joining James Sicily, who has served as the Hawks' lone captain since 2023 when he succeeded Ben McEvoy.

It is a remarkable accomplishment for Newcombe, the Poowong-raised prospect, becoming the first player taken from the Mid-Season Draft to be named as an AFL captain.

“I am incredibly humbled and privileged to be appointed as co-captain of Hawthorn alongside James, who has been a great mentor to me since I joined the club," Newcombe said.

“Being a Hawks supporter my whole life, it has always been a dream of mine to lead the club, and I am committed to getting the best out of myself and my teammates as we continue to hunt the club's next premiership."

2025 was a career-year for the 24-year-old, averaging 22.4 disposals, 5.9 clearances, 5.9 score involvements and 5.1 tackles per game.

Newcombe's elite leadership and influence in the midfield mean 2026 could be the year he establishes himself as one of the game's better midfield bulls. His efforts could shape Hawthorn's top eight chances too, given the recent significant shoulder injury to Will Day and the departure of the influential James Worpel.

Sicily expressed his excitement to share the reins with Newcombe.

“I couldn't be prouder of Jai's development as a leader since he joined the club, and we are both extremely passionate about the direction we are headed as we strive for the ultimate success," Sicily said.

“Being co-captains allows us to share the load and give greater opportunity for Jai to lead the club.

“It is an honour to continue to lead this club as captain, alongside one of my great mates."

Newcombe and the Hawks begin their 2026 pre-season schedule with a match simulation hitout against long-time rivals Geelong on Monday, February 16, at the Kennedy Community Centre.
