Richmond young defender Josh Gibcus has signed a new deal, taking him until the end of 2029.

Gibcus penned a three-year extension to remain with the Tigers, committing to the future of the rebuilding Punt Road club.

He'll become a free agent by the end of his new deal.

The key position player was drafted by Richmond with Pick 9 in the 2021 draft, and emerged as a highly-talented defender, playing 18 matches in his debut season.

However, severe hamstring troubles and recurring injuries saw Gibcus miss the entire 2023 campaign, which was compounded by an ACL injury in Round 1, 2024 against Carlton.

He returned for the final game of last year, and has started the new season brightly, as he builds his way back to AFL level after multiple injury-marred years.

"Josh has worked so hard on his game and his body over the past few years. It has been terrific to see him have a faultless pre-season and return to our AFL team," Richmond EGM of Football Talent, Blair Hartley said.

"He has huge talent and a skill set that will be important for us going forward, so we are delighted to have him commit to the Club.

"Josh should take great confidence from this contract extension and his recent performances. We are all excited to see what he can achieve across the coming years."

Gibcus joins Seth Campbell, Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper signed until 2029.

Richmond still need to make contract decisions on premiership heroes Toby Nankervis, Nick Vlastuin, Nathan Broad, Tom Lynch and Deion Prestia, while a host of emerging talents like Hugo Ralphsmith, Maurice Rioli, Jasper Alger, Rhyan Mansell and Tyler Sonsie.
