Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says his side's loss to Adelaide in the round two Grand Final rematch served as a "kick in the backside" that came at the right time.

Hardwick noted that the team reviewed last week's loss and considered it as a learning experience, finding that their contested possessions left a lot to be desired, trailing the Crows by 48 in that statistic.

"The great thing about a nine-day break is we can do a lot of research on why that happened, and we went through a lot of vision on why we got that result," Hardwick told afl.com.au.

"We've always gone with philosophy you always learn a lot from your losses, more so than your wins.

These are lessons that Hardwick will hope sticks with his team as the season goes on and will be seeking a quick improvement before the Tigers take on the Hawks this Sunday in their round three match.

"Unfortunately, if you give up those numbers, you're lucky to lose the game by 36 points, to be frank.

"It's a good kick in the backside at the right time."

Richmond will be looking forward to seeing this weeks inclusions Dion Prestia and Nick Vlastuin make some noise around contested ball situations in their match up against Hawthorn.

"Dion is a great player and he played some good footy last week [VFL], so we look forward to welcoming him back," Hardwick said.

"Nick Vlastuin is another player who thrives in the contested nature of the game, so they're going to be two handy inclusions for us."
