Leek Aleer has signed a two-year deal at GWS after a trade fallout with St Kilda.

Aleer has locked his future away until the end of 2027 at the Giants, and will continue his career in New South Wales.

The 24-year-old was bound for Moorabbin after 18 months of chasing, and all systems were go until the carpet was ripped from underneath him.

The Saints were believed to find it difficult to part ways with another future second-round selection after giving one for West Coast's Liam Ryan.

However, GWS football boss Jason McCartney has denied suggestions that negotiations between the Giants and St Kilda over a trade for Aleer were difficult.

Throughout trade negotiations, the Giants were still keen to retain the former Pick 15, and were happy to keep him at the club.

Aleer has shown plenty of promise in his 25 matches since 2021, including a career-best 13 outings this season.

"We're thrilled to have Leek commit to the club for the next two seasons. He's a player we've invested in and one we believe has a bright future in the game," McCartney said.

"As a developing key defender, Leek brings elite athleticism, aerial ability, and a desire to improve each time he takes to the field.

"While in recent weeks there's been discussion around where his future lies, we have always been steadfast in the fact that Leek is a highly valued player and person at the GIANTS, and we're thrilled to have him on board through to 2027, and we believe he'll continue to grow into a key part of our backline for years to come."

Aleer's re-signing contributes to the list of Giants committing for 2025, which includes Finn Callaghan, Connor Idun, Aaron Cadman, Xavier O'Halloran, Darcy Jones, Jack Buckley, Ryan Angwin, and Toby McMullin.
