GWS coach Adam Kingsley has confirmed All-Australian pair Lachie Whitfield and Jesse Hogan will face Geelong on Saturday, with the duo to return from injury.

Whitfield missed last week's win over West Coast due to concussion, while a foot injury has limited Hogan over a similar period.

Both were required to get through training this week to be cleared to play, with Kingsley pleased with their progress by Thursday's main session.

"He's fine to play, he got through training," the GWS coach said of Whitfield.

"He wasn't wearing a pink hat, which was nice, in terms of contact. He feels great, trained well, so he'll play.

"[Hogan] hasn't got any pain anymore, so that's nice. Feels like that week off did him a world of good, and he'll be good to go also."

Key defender Jack Buckley is no certainty of facing the Cats after hurting his ankle in the win over West Coast.

Already without Sam Taylor, who could return next week, Buckley's potential absence would be a major blow for Kingsley.

While still likely to play against the Cats, Buckley will need to remain fit at Friday's captain's run.

"He rolled his ankle last game, so he didn't need to train today," Kingsley said.

"He did a session prior to the actual training session. He ticked the boxes he needed to tick off. We'll give him every chance to get up.

"It's looking pretty positive at the moment, but he's still got to progress tomorrow. Ankles are a little bit notorous to heal to the 90 per cent then take a little bit longer.

"We'll just see how he does tommorrow."

If Buckley is unable to play, uncapped tall Wade Derksen could be named for a debut.

Kingsley will need to weigh up how he structures his backline, noting Geelong often play a little smaller in attack compared to most.

"We'll look at their forward line. They don't seem to play a big forward line," Kingsley claimed.

"Jeremy Cameron roams the field a bit, (Patrick) Dangerfield plays a little deeper and (Shannon) Neale covers the ground really well as their real big guy.

"We'll assess that at match committee, whether we need Wade to come in and make a debut or whether we think we can cover it without changing the backline too much."

Meanwhile, veteran Stephen Coniglio is set for another week in the VFL after returning from a glute issue last weekend, while forward Brent Daniels remains some time away with his latest adductor setback.

The Giants will host Geelong at Engie Stadium at 4:15pm (AEST) on Saturday.
