Giants coach Leon Cameron is heading into his seventh season in charge under increasing pressure to deliver September results after an early exit in 2021.

Cameron, who took the reins in 2014 and signed his most recent extension in 2020, comes out of contract at the end of this season, with rife speculation sure to follow the 49-year-old should the Giants fail to make a mark on the competition this season.

GWS CEO Dave Matthews remained coy while speaking on SEN’s Dwayne’s World earlier this week, revealing that contract talks with Cameron are set to take place soon.
“I think both parties are really comfortable with where we’re up to,” Matthews said.
“We have said a number of times – he’s been a very, very successful coach for our club and we were all pleased that he was able to lead us back into the finals last year – five out of six seasons in the finals and competing pretty deep, too.

“He’s done a great job and both parties are pretty comfortable with where things sit at the moment.

“Those discussions will happen in the coming weeks, and we’ll take it from there, but he certainly finished the year last year in fine fashion for us.

“We’ll see how that plays out.”

Cameron has enjoyed relative success throughout his time at the Giants, coaching the club to its maiden grand final appearance in 2019, before falling short against Richmond to the tune of 89 points.

Despite revealing in the September action in five of his six seasons so far, Cameron is yet to coach the Giants to that elusive piece of silverware, losing to Geelong in the semi finals last year.

After the dark early days of the club though, Cameron has led the team to become a consistent performer and has retained masses of star power, including gun midfielder Josh Kelly, who signed with the club on an eight-year deal in 2021.

The Giants face an early test this season, coming up against cross-town rivals Sydney in Round 1, with a road trip to face Richmond in Melbourne rounding out March.
