GWS recruit Clayton Oliver has strained his calf on Monday, but according to coach Adam Kingsley, it's "not a big deal."

The injury is set to sideline him until at least the end of January, delaying his ability to press for a Giants debut and Opening Round selection.

"He fitted in really well," Kingsley said.

"He did have a hiccup on Monday with a calf issue. So that's put him back a week or two. It's disappointing but not a big deal, so we move on pretty quickly.

"We've got plans for him. He's an outstanding stoppage player."

Oliver previously dealt with multiple hamstring injuries during his 205-game career at Melbourne before crossing to GWS in the off-season.

It adds to a spate of injuries suffered in the first week back since Christmas, which has drawn widespread reaction about the length of AFL players' off-seasons.

Oliver's new captain, Toby Greene, is under an injury cloud, with the Giants skipper tending to a "sore glute".

"Toby's been one of those guys in rehab for the most part," Kingsley added.

"I feel like he'll be back on deck next week, but I am mindful I've said that in the past, and it hasn't panned out like that.

"A couple of our players have boxes to tick before they qualify to play, and Toby is one of those guys, who probably ends up being touch-and-go on (State of Origin) as well as our season, and hopefully he takes the steps he needs to take."

Coleman Medallist Jesse Hogan is "tracking okay" but has plenty of hurdles to jump over before he'll be declared fit, which is suspected to be a fortnight away.

GWS' season kicks off against Hawthorn in Opening Round on 7 March against Hawthorn.
