The match Review Panel copped a plethora of abuse in season 2017 for some very questionable and seemingly inconsistent decisions.

Fans were often left puzzled and angered at different decisions that were handed down each week.

New AFL football operations manager Steven Hocking has already flagged changes to the system in 2018, however, Geelong CEO Brian Cook believes there is a straight forward way to ensure the Match Review Panel's decisions become more consistent.

“I’d like a simple system where the MRP is one person,” Cook told SEN.

“They make judgment, they look at it and say that’s what this person gets.

"I think you’ll get much more consistency.”

In 2017, the MRP team consisted of Michael Christian, Nathan Burke, Jason Johnson, Michael Jamison and Jimmy Bartel. However, Bartel stepped down from the role in mid August.

Meanwhile Cook said Geelong is buzzing following the return of favourite son, Gary Ablett, with the club optimistic of once again contending for a premiership.

“There’s a big smile on our face because the place is bubbling,” Cook said.

“We’ve got a 12 per cent increase on our membership figures compared to the same stage last year.

"I think that’s a combination of getting nine games down here in Geelong along with the Gary Ablett factor."
