Chris Judd's manager Paul Connors has recounted a phone call in 2007 in which Geelong legend Gary Ablett Snr pleaded with him to keep Judd away from the Blues.

In an interview with former journalist Mike Sheahan on Fox Footy's Open Mike on Tuesday night, Connors answered a call from Ablett on the future of his main client.

Judd was reportedly deciding between Essendon, Collingwood, Melbourne and Carlton, and Connors said Ablett thought Judd should have stayed away from the Blues.

"If (Gary) wants to track you down, he will get your number," Connors told Sheahan.

"He just said '(It's) Gary' ... I hadn't spoken to him in about five years, but I knew who it was."

"He just said, 'Don't choose Carlton, Paul'. He said 'Don't let 'Juddy' go to Carlton'.

"He didn't think their midfield (was good), and he didn't think they were any good at the time.

"(He) was talking about Gary (Jr.) being tagged and Juddy being tagged ... the funny thing was that it was Josh Carr doing the tagging, and he was my player as well."

Connors also spoke to Open Mike about Judd's preferences throughout that season, and said at one stage he was leaning toward Carlton's rivals in Collingwood.

"I remember Juddy leaning towards Collingwood at one stage, (but) I didn't want him to go to Collingwood because I couldn't have got him there," Connors said.

"They didn't have the picks, it wasn't going to work.

"In the back of my mind, I thought Carlton, Melbourne and Essendon could do the deal.

"Essendon didn't have a coach (at the time). They (Melbourne) didn't have good facilities, they were at the Junction Oval.

"Greg Swann pounded the pavement and worked pretty hard (to get Judd to Carlton)."

In the end, Judd moved from the Eagles to Carlton in a deal which saw Josh Kennedy, pick three and pick 30 head west.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist played eight seasons at the Blues from 2008-2015 and played 145 games for 90 goals.
