Carlton are the frontrunners to sign star Giant Zac Williams, according to 7News' Tom Browne.

It emerged today that the 26-year old will depart GWS in free agency, with a move to a Victorian club being his preference.

Williams is keen to head south to live closer to his sister who lives in Albury.

“It’s disappointing to receive this news as Zac has come a long way since coming through the Giants Academy pathway,” Giants football boss Jason McCartney told the club website.

“We understand that free agency is part of the current football landscape and that the players have the right to go down this path.”

North Melbourne and Carlton are considered the two favourites to sign Williams, with teammate Aidan Corr reportedly set to join the Kangaroos.

However, Williams is understood to have more interest in becoming a Blue, who are desperate for midfield help for Patrick Cripps.

Williams could command a deal worth upwards of $900,000 a season.
