Fremantle are in line for a double boost for their backline, with captain Alex Pearce and small stopper Brandon Walker both in the mix to make the trip to Sydney this weekend.

Pearce was close to suiting up against the Saints in Round 16 as he nears a return from a shin injury that has kept him out of action since May.

The Dockers skipper wanted to face the Saints but was 'held back' by the club, with a full session on Thursday the final hurdle for the key defender.

Speaking to media, coach Justin Longmuir provided the latest on Pearce's selection prospects to face the Swans on Sunday.

"If he gets through training and what we ask of him today, he'll play," the Fremantle coach said.

"He'll fully train, hopefully, he's going to go through a decent session.

"He'll have to complete the whole lot, and then we have to see how he pulls up.

"He put his hand up last week; he was trying to get up for that game. That's a good sign when you have to hold a player back.

"We're confident he'll get up (for Sunday), but he needs to do the work."

Fremantle will be forced to make at least one change for the Round 17 bout, with veteran Nat Fyfe to miss the coming weeks with a calf injury sustained in a warm-up during the Saints clash.

The aforementioned Walker is firmly in the frame to come into the side, having played the past two weeks in the WAFL for the Peel Thunder after months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

Having pressed his case for a recall, Walker has given Longmuir more to consider at selection this week.

"Yeah, he's a chance," Longmuir said of Walker.

"Two games back, played a full game last week, took a good step forward in a lot of the things we asked of him. He'll be in the mix.

"We'll see if we can squeeze him in and rearrange the team a little bit, or if he needs another week."

The Dockers will name an extended side on Thursday night at 6:20 pm (AEST), with final teams to be confirmed an hour before Sunday's 1:10 pm bounce at the SCG.
