Geelong's 1983 best and fairest winner, Raymond Card, has been sentenced to nine years in prison, with a non-parole period of four years, after driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a crash with another vehicle, which killed his partner and left a 19-year-old woman with life-altering injuries.

According to 9News, Card is believed to have been driving four times over the legal blood-alcohol limit when the crash occurred on November 16, 2024, on the Geelong Ring Road in Lara.

The accident left the young woman with chronic pain and nerve damage, hindering her journey as a promising volleyball player.

Per the 9News report, the woman's parents have expressed their disappointment with the length of the sentence.

"I'm a little bit disappointed. The sentence was quite light; it was a very serious offence," the woman's father, Peter Macleod, said.

"I think it's time a stronger message was sent."

Card, now 68 years old, played for Geelong between 1977 and 1987 in the VFL, featuring in 110 games, mainly as a defender.
