It is a time of reckoning at Alberton, with the club set to embark upon a new era under Josh Carr.

Port Adelaide has long been recognised for their incredible consistency and impressive list build, but as it stands, they have two options: invest in youth or go hard at remaining contender status.

This year hasn't fallen the way outgoing coach Ken Hinkley would've preferred, but through injury and form, he was able to expose multiple players to the rigours of AFL.

But with no first-round selection (sold to Gold Coast for Jack Lukosius), and the first pick coming at 26, how can the Power improve their list?

Below are some targets that would both enhance their chances of returning to September, but also safeguard their future with local talent that could be lured home.

Here are five trade and free agency targets for Port Adelaide to consider this year.

A dashing defender who has been starved of opportunity at the Lions, Beecken had toiled away in the SANFL before being scooped up in last year's Mid-Season Draft, and has since featured in the VFL.

Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens, the 24-year-old would be a bargain-based purchase in terms of acquisition, but could reap more benefits than his cost would suggest.

He was regarded as one of the SANFL's best players, known for his speed and elite ball use across half back.

He has played 26 games for Brisbane in the reserves, averaging 20.8 disposals, 6.2 marks and 2.8 tackles from defence.

Beecken has also had the luxury of learning from Lions stars Keidean Coleman, Brandon Starcevich, Dayne Zorko, Ryan Lester and Noah Answerth for the past 12 months.
