It is a time of reckoning at Alberton, with the club set to embark upon a new era under Josh Carr.

Port Adelaide has long been recognised for their incredible consistency and impressive list build, but as it stands, they have two options: invest in youth or go hard at remaining contender status.

This year hasn't fallen the way outgoing coach Ken Hinkley would've preferred, but through injury and form, he was able to expose multiple players to the rigours of AFL.

But with no first-round selection (sold to Gold Coast for Jack Lukosius), and the first pick coming at 26, how can the Power improve their list?

Below are some targets that would both enhance their chances of returning to September, but also safeguard their future with local talent that could be lured home.

Here are five trade and free agency targets for Port Adelaide to consider this year.

The Giants defender has finally been rewarded with senior opportunities, albeit to the misfortune (injury) of Sam Taylor.

Since being taken with Pick 15 in the 2021 National Draft, GWS has entrusted the intercept defender on 19 occasions, opening the door for multiple rivals to pitch him.

Enter Port Adelaide, who, despite holding Esava Ratugolea, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Aliir Aliir in their backline mix, still need reassurances in the defensive 50.

Aleer's versatility and athleticism can provide cover for all types of opposition forwards, which could help free up Miles Bergman, who has previously been earmarked for that role.

Recruited from Angle Vale in South Australia, the appeal to return to his home state could also be a ploy made by the Power to lure the 23-year-old, as well as more AFL games.
