It is a time of reckoning at Alberton, with the club set to embark upon a new era under Josh Carr.

Port Adelaide has long been recognised for their incredible consistency and impressive list build, but as it stands, they have two options: invest in youth or go hard at remaining contender status.

This year hasn't fallen the way outgoing coach Ken Hinkley would've preferred, but through injury and form, he was able to expose multiple players to the rigours of AFL.

But with no first-round selection (sold to Gold Coast for Jack Lukosius), and the first pick coming at 26, how can the Power improve their list?

Below are some targets that would both enhance their chances of returning to September, but also safeguard their future with local talent that could be lured home.

Here are five trade and free agency targets for Port Adelaide to consider this year.

There's no surprise that Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera's name is at the top of the list.

The star Saint has close links to the club through great friends Jason Horne-Francis and Jase Burgoyne, and is currently weighing up his future amid a breakout season that sees rivals send stoppers to him.

However, the silky footballer also presents as a desperate void filler through the back half, while he has also shown he can play further up the field to good effect.

Wanganeen-Milera has largely been used as a running half-back, but in more recent weeks, has been deployed through the midfield and up forward, which St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says he can play like Adelaide great Andrew McLeod.

The Power need a point of difference on all three lines, while it would also add further star power to the already bulging on-ball group that has seen captain Connor Rozee sent to defence.

Despite the plays of Adelaide and St Kilda, Port Adelaide remains very much in the running for Wanganeen-Milera's signature, and will continue to do so until the end of his career.

The difficulty with luring the 22-year-old is what he'll cost in trade capital, and the Power currently doesn't possess a first-round selection.
