In the first season of a young AFL career, many players take some time to adjust to the physicality and skill gap between junior football and the elite competition.

Every year, there are players who take leaps in their second season. Some go from fringe best 23 players in their first year to mainstays in their respective lines, while others go from elite first-year talents to some of the very best in the competition.

There are many potential second-year talents who could take leaps in 2026. We look through the five players most likely to take a sizeable second-year leap next season.

Sam Lalor

The first overall pick in the 2024 draft looked set for stardom after leading his Tigers to a Round 1 comeback win against Carlton.

The hybrid midfielder/forward had 18 disposals and two goals on debut, setting himself up for what was meant to be an all-time first-year campaign.

However, Lalor's season didn't go to plan, playing in just 11 matches, having dealt with hip-flexor and recurring hamstring injuries throughout the year.

A lack of continuity saw Lalor average a modest 12.0 disposals and a goal per match.

Despite his low numbers, Lalor's strength and athleticism were on display, showing great potential.

Should the big-bodied midfielder have a healthy 2026 campaign, there is no ceiling on what he can accomplish.
