AFL Barwon club Lara has entered recess for the 2026 season after failing to establish a senior men's program for the coming Geelong Football Netball League season.
Following discussions between AFL Barwon, AFL Victoria and the Lara FNC Executive, and a meeting with the Lara Sporting Club on Monday, the decision was made amid challenges for the Cats to field Senior and Reserve teams this year.
The "difficult decision" comes with the club having "long-term strength and sustainability" of the Lara FNC in front of mind.
"The Lara Football Netball Club wishes to express its deep regret that it will be unable to field Senior and Reserve Men's Football teams for the 2026 season," a club statement read.
"This has been a difficult decision, made in the interests of the long-term strength and sustainability of the Club. While this is a setback, it also provides an opportunity to focus on rebuilding and strengthening our foundations.
"We sincerely thank everyone for their understanding and ongoing support during this transitional period."
The Cats have confirmed that their Senior Women's Football, Under 18, Junior and Netball programs will continue as planned.
AFL Barwon Chair Ashley West said the competition acknowledged the club's "extremely unenviable position".
“AFL Barwon appreciates the gravity of the decision made by the Lara Sporting Club this evening. It is an extremely unenviable position for any club, and we acknowledge the careful decision-making process, which considered the broader impacts on the league.
“We remain optimistic that, through strong junior participation in both football and netball, along with recent consolidation in senior netball and senior female football, Lara can rebound strongly from the current senior men's football challenges. AFL Barwon is fully committed to working with the Lara Sporting Club to rebuild what is a vital growth corridor and an important sporting community and social connection point for the town and region.
“Local football and netball are stronger with a sustainable and competitive Lara.
“AFL Barwon also acknowledges the dedication of Lara FNC officials, volunteers and members, who contribute significantly to their club and community. We remain committed to working closely with the Lara FNC Executive to support the club during this challenging period and assist in building a sustainable future.”
Lara's Senior team was due to host St Mary's on April 18 to open the new season. The club finished 11th on the ladder in 2025, winning one of its 18 matches, amassing a percentage of 19.83.
The Lara Sporting Club was founded in 1880 and has won 10 premierships, its most recent flag coming in 2002.
