Small forward Oskar Smartt has been informed he will not be offered a contract for next year.

Smartt was selected with Pick 17 in the 2025 Mid-Season Rookie Draft, following his time in the Bombers' VFL system, beginning in 2024.

He played in four games for Essendon this year, making his debut against the Tigers in Round 18. His best performance came against the Giants, where he had nine disposals with three behinds.

The 19-year-old also played 24 games in the VFL, where he kicked 23 goals across that stint.

"Oskar's AFL opportunity was well deserved thanks to his perseverance over the last few years within our VFL program," said Essendon's GM, Daniel McPherson.

"Oskar's a popular character across both our AFL and VFL programs and has made a positive impact in his short time at our club. We wish him all the best for his footy future."

This news follows the announcement of Essendon's departures of ruckman Todd Goldstein and defender Jayden Laverde, as well as the confirmation from free agent Sam Draper that his desire is to join Brisbane.

The Bombers hold picks 4, 5, 22 and 25 in the upcoming national draft.
