Could we be heading for a night time Grand Final in 2020?

This year's decider will clash with the Spring Racing Carnival, with the Cox Plate and the Grand Final being on the same day in late October, meaning the league Commission could welcome the idea of moving the timeslot for the final game of the year.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire believes it's only a matter of time before we see the move for this year's showpiece event.

โ€œIf everything goes according to plan I think weโ€™ll have a night Grand Final this year,โ€ McGuire said on Triple M.

โ€œI think weโ€™ll have the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on the Friday night, I think weโ€™ll have the holiday on the Friday, then Saturday will be the Cox Plate and Saturday night will be the Grand Final.

โ€œI think for AFL football, Channel 7 and Fox Footy would be very, very keen to get as much viewership as possible on the Grand Final given the restrictions that have happened so far this year.โ€

One of the AFL's founding figures, Ross Oakley believes that the league is behind the times.

โ€œEventually it is inevitable,โ€ he told the Herald Sun.

โ€œItโ€™s a case of supporters' views catching up with the whole concept of night sport.

โ€œMost other sports are played at night and ours is too, but a lot of them are playing their grand finals at night.

โ€œI think it is a better spectacle at night. We complained terribly when we went to Friday night football (in the 1980s) but in the end result, people were keen to finish work on Friday, have a quick meal and go down and watch the footy.

โ€œFriday night became an absolute boon and it was easier to make the game look great and to have entertainment in a night environment.โ€
