Sydney have suffered an early blow in their bid to beat Fremantle to their fourth win of the year, with co-captain Callum Mills subbed out within the opening minutes of Saturday's affair at the SCG.

Mills came from the ground in the early stages of the Round 9 match after sustaining a calf injury, with the defensive-minded midfielder heading down to the rooms for further assessment.

With just five minutes surpassed in the match, the Swans were forced to pull the trigger on their tactical sub and put Mills on ice, with young utility Marc Sheather brought into the game.

Mills was seen nursing his leg shortly after being subbed out, with the Swans confirming a calf injury for the 26-year-old.

The injury will hinder Sydney's plans against the Dockers, with both clubs in desperate need of a victory as they sit in the lower third on the AFL ladder with three wins and five losses each.
