West Coast veteran Sam Mitchell has come under fire for appearing to spit in the direction of Port Adelaide star Sam Gray.

Gray was awarded a free-kick and was laying on the ground with Mitchell standing over the top of him when the former Hawk spat with his saliva narrowly missing Gray who was facing the opposite direction.

Gray's teammate, Darcy Bryne-Jones, remonstrated with Mitchell at the time.

Former Port star Kane Cornes said on The Sunday Footy Show it was very disappointing from the four-time premiership player.

“That’s a pretty ordinary look from Sam Mitchell,” Cornes said.

“I think he would love to have his time again there. Lucky that didn’t hit Robbie Gray on the back of the head."
