The West Coast Eagles have confirmed forward and current co-captain Oscar Allen has told the club he intends to leave this off-season via free agency via a club statement on Sunday afternoon.

According to 9News' Tom Morris, Allen also advised key senior officials at the club during an exit meeting on Friday that he is planning on joining the Brisbane Lions.

In the club's statement, Head of List Management and Recruiting Matt Clarke confirmed the meeting between Allen, senior coach Andrew McQualter and other club officials.

Clarke did not confirm West Coast's approach to the restricted free agent's departure, with the club set to weigh up whether they will match Allen's rival contract offer to force a trade or accept the AFL's compensation, which could potentially be Pick 2 in the National Draft.

“During a respectful and engaging end of season meeting with our coach Andrew McQualter, Head of Football John Worsfold and myself on Friday, Oscar informed us of his intention to explore free agency,” Clarke said.

“As Oscar is a restricted free agent, we retain the right to match any offer made to him by another club and Oscar understands that.

“We will work through the next steps in this process as they unfold, assess our options and make a considered decision.”

AFL Media's Cal Twomey has also reported that Brisbane have tabled a contract of "at least five years" to the star forward.

The report comes days after Oscar Allen told Perth radio station Mix94.5's Pete & Kymba with Ben Cousins that contract negotiations between him and West Coast had "broken down", despite senior coach Andrew McQualter calling Allen a "required player" for 2026.

Allen kicked 12 goals in as many matches this season before suffering a season-ending knee injury in June. He was West Coast's leading goalkicker in 2023, booting a career-high 53 majors.
