Dockers push selection case in big Peel win, Sharks make it six straight: WAFL Wrap

Round 17 of the WAFL season saw four games and all of them had their own implications for finals chances or building to season 2024.

From East Fremantle forcing Claremont their third straight loss at the WACA, to Peel's demolition of the Eagles, it was another exciting round of WAFL footy.

SWAN DISTRICTS VS SOUTH FREMANTLE (87-50)

Steel Blue Oval turned it on to begin the round and Swan Districts didn't let their fans down, kicking away in the last quarter to defeat South Fremantle by 37 points.

It was neck and neck for three quarters but the Bulldogs' final ter, fadeouts would again prove costly with a five-goal to nil term, with the Swans scoring their eighth win of the season in the process.

Swan Districts had plenty of standouts and it was led by the rampaging Aidan Clarke who amassed an incredible 41 disposals, 11 marks and taking the ball inside 50 seven times.

Up forward, captain Christopher Jones was back in form by kicking three goals, joined by the consistent Jesse Turner who had 35 disposals, 9 marks, 3 tackles & 4 inside 50s.

Tobe Watson was a huge difference down back and stood up when it mattered, holding the Bulldogs' forward line to great effect, finishing with 31 touches and 10 great marks.

The shining light for South Fremantle was the debutant Aaron Drage who showed he has potential in the big time, amassing 23 disposals, 4 marks and dished the ball inside 50 3 times.

Brandon Donaldson was swung up forward but was not able to create the same impact as the derby, only held to two goals in tandem with Jack Blechynden who also kicked two goals.

Jimmy Miller continues to show his development as the Bulldogs' prominent ruckman with another 30 hitouts to go with his 13 disposals.

PEEL THUNDER VS WEST COAST (132-34)

Peel Thunder gained valuable percentage in their fight for the double chance, accounting for the West Coast Eagles by 98 points at Lane Group Stadium in Mandurah.

A six-goal-to-one opening term laid the foundation for Peel's emphatic victory against an Eagles side who looked disappointing after a couple of close losses and a draw.

The big-bodied Blair Bell put it on the line today in one of his best performances in the forward half for Peel kicking four goals from 19 disposals, 10 marks and 3 inside 50s.

Peel's midfield had contributors everywhere and were solid at the clearance, with Ben Hancock leading from the front - amassing 33 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles and producing brilliant service for Will Brodie [31 disposals], Brady Grey [26 Disposals] and Karl Worner [26 Disposals]

Matthew Taberner also gave notice to the Dockers selectors with an impressive three-goal performance, including 8 brilliant marks.

The Eagles had very few standouts in the demolition but Joshua Browne grew his value as a prominent midfielder with another 29 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles.

Luke Foley was not afraid to put his head over the footy when heavy numbers got involved. He had 20 disposals but put 8 hard tackles on his Thunder opponents.

EAST FREMANTLE VS CLAREMONT (76-56)

East Fremantle charged back to top spot on the ladder following their sixth win in succession, this time against Claremont at the WACA by 20 points.

Having trailed by four points at halftime, the Sharks pulled away after Claremont's inaccuracy in front of goal bought them undone set up by the Sharks' brand of pressure footy. Claremont's 3rd loss in a row drops them back to fifth place.

East Fremantle had their most prominent service from the backline led by Matthew Jupp, who shut down the Tigers forward line with 10 marks to go with his 18 disposals inside defensive 50, his pressure on the ball was vital all afternoon.

Tom Joyce [28 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles] and Kyle Baskerville [26 disposals] were outstanding from midfield and proved crucial in the centre clearance battle against the strong Tigers centre rotation.

In his return from injury, Dillon O'Reilly kicked three goals in a strong comeback and former Peel player Brayden Lawler kicked four.

Claremont's most effective forward was Alexander Manuel who kicked three goals straight from 11 disposals.

Teia Miles continued to show why he can be a key for Claremont's tilt to the finals with 30 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles and had vital support from Ben Edwards who amassed 25 touches.

Once again the dominant ruckman Oliver Eastland was brilliant with 38 hitouts and his follow up was commendable with 25 disposals and 9 marks.

WEST PERTH VS PERTH (114-74)

West Perth have kept their finals hopes alive with a 40-point win over Perth in Joondalup, but their last quarter does present some questions for the reigning premiers.

A goalless last term allowed Perth to finish with a flourish with six straight goals.

It was the Tyler Keitel show as the West Perth forward was on fire all day, kicking six goals to make it 47 for the season.

He had tremendous support from newly appointed swingman Noah Pegoraro who kicked four goals. His opportunities were set up by the service of Luke Meadows in midfield, leading the charge with 29 disposals.

Zac Guadagnin also was strong in the backline, taking another 10 marks and had 22 disposals, carrying the Falcons' defensive structure.

Jack Cooley was one of many positives for the Demons, gathering 33 disposals, 3 tackles and 5 inside 50s and provided valuable delivery to his forwards.

The forward line was led by Samuel Stubbs who continued his consistent form inside 50, kicking three goals and had support from Charlie Thompson who had 4 inside 50s and amassed 26 disposals.
