Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield believes GWS midfielder Josh Kelly shouldn't sign a long-term deal, despite the big money attached to it.

Kelly has been linked to a nine-year, multi-million dollar deal from North Melbourne, the club that his father played 61 games for in the 1980s.

Dangerfield warned Kelly against signing the deal, and said he could earn much more over the course of his career without committing the majority of his playing future with one club.

“I’m not sure I would (take it),” Dangerfield told Channel 7 on Monday night.

“Josh Kelly is that good and he’s going to play for a very long period of time.

“The game is going to change a lot over the next nine years and salary caps will go up, so I don’t know how that deal looks in terms of whether it takes into account uplift in potential new CBAs.

“That may not be a lot of money in five years’ time. You just don’t know. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.”

Kelly has had a stellar 2017 campaign so far, and is averaging 29.4 disposals, 5.1 clearances and 6.6 tackles per game and hasn't missed a match so far this season.
