Adelaide rookie sensation, Hugh Greenwood, has suffered a setback in pre-season, with an Achilles injury set to keep him off the training track until next year.

Greenwood underwent foot surgery on Monday to correct Achilles soreness stemming from an injury he suffered late in the season.

Despite the surgery, the 25-year-old former basketballer will be ready for Round 1 next season.

"Hugh was experiencing some soreness around his Achilles towards the back end of last season and it hadn't improved over the holiday period," Adelaide general manager high performance Matt Hass said.

"After further investigation, there was some irritation in an area adjacent to his Achilles and it was decided surgery was the best option for him.

"He will recover from the surgery over the next few weeks and build up to full training in the new year."

Greenwood impressed in his first season for the Crows, after walking away from basketball and a contract with the Perth Wildcats.

He played 15 games, including every finals match, averaging 16 disposals and 6.6 tackles per game.
